The four debutants

Curaçao — a Caribbean island of around 150,000 people — became the smallest nation by population ever to reach a World Cup. Their shirt is one almost no casual fan owned before this summer, which is exactly what makes it special.

Uzbekistan became the first Central Asian nation ever to reach a World Cup, and Jordan made a rare first appearance for a Middle Eastern side that qualified the hard way. Add the returnees — DR Congo, back for the first time since playing as Zaire in 1974, plus Scotland and Iraq — and this was a tournament full of shirts you'd struggle to find on any high street.
