Football on the Catwalk: Udinese Unveil a 130-Year Shirt at Milan Fashion Week

The football shirt walked the runway this week. On 22 September, in the middle of Milan Fashion Week, Udinese unveiled their 2026-27 third shirt not on a training pitch but on a catwalk — a 130th-anniversary kit designed with fashion designer Giuseppe Buccinnà and Udinese's kit maker Macron, in partnership with the Camera Moda Fashion Trust. If you love shirts as design objects as much as match kit, that is exactly the spirit behind our mystery football shirt boxes.

A kit built for a birthday, shown at a fashion week

Udinese were founded in 1896, which makes this their 130th year, and the shirt is drenched in that anniversary. The base is an off-white cream, broken up by bold black curved side panels and piping that deliberately echo the kit silhouettes of the mid-2000s. Tone-on-tone geometric star textures are woven into the fabric, gold accents trim the sleeve edges, and — the detail that makes it — the usual club crest on the left chest is replaced by a commemorative star emblem marking the 1896 founding. Buccinnà's own signature sits just above the Macron logo.

Football and fashion finally stopped pretending

For years the football shirt and the fashion world circled each other. Terrace culture borrowed from the catwalk; designers quietly nicked ideas from 1990s kits. Udinese showing a match shirt at Milan Fashion Week, made by a named fashion designer, is that relationship going public. This is not a lifestyle capsule or a hoodie with a crest on it — it is the actual third shirt, the one players will wear in Serie A, presented as fashion.

It fits a pattern we have watched build all year: retro shirts becoming streetwear, obscure national kits becoming collector currency, and clubs treating a shirt launch as a cultural moment rather than a retail email. Udinese have simply taken it to the most literal conclusion — a shirt on a model, under fashion-week lights.

Why this one matters to collectors

Anniversary shirts already hold a special place on any want-list, because they are one-offs by definition: a club turns 130 once. Add a designer collaboration, a crest swapped for a commemorative star, and a run that will always be tied to a single season, and you have the kind of shirt that gets harder to find every year. The cream-and-black colourway is distinctive without being gaudy, which is often the sweet spot for a shirt that ages well rather than loudly.

A Shirt in a Box take: the shirt is the artwork now

We have always argued that a great football shirt is a piece of design you can wear, and this week Udinese made the argument for us in the most on-the-nose way possible. When a Serie A club celebrates 130 years by putting its third shirt on a Milan catwalk, the old line between “kit” and “garment” is basically gone.

That is good news for anyone who collects. It means more clubs will treat the third shirt as a canvas, more one-season specials will be worth hunting down, and more of the shirts that turn up in a mystery box will carry a real story. Udinese's anniversary shirt is a lovely example: a birthday, a designer, a founding-year star, and a runway. The best shirts have always been more than sportswear — Milan just made it official.
